Comments: I worked with several other PCVs on a regional community-based tourism initiative while living in the city of Santa Cruz. Peace Corps gave me a whole new perspective, not only on other people but also on myself, what I am capable of doing and what I believe in.
Bulgaria

Comments: Returned last fall after living in a small farming community in the northeast part of Bulgaria, about 80 Km south of the Danube. I am currently a full time grad student at Marquette University studying Public Service. I also work part time at The Milwaukee Christian Center, a nonprofit located on the near south side.

Comments: An incredibly cathartic experience. I spent two wonderful years teaching high school students in the Rhodopi mountain town of Smolyan, located in south-central Bulgaria. Two years in Cairo, Egypt followed. I'm now a Trinity Fellow at Marquette University's College of Communication, working toward an M.A. in intercultural/organizational communication. I am also the part-time manager of marketing and public relations for Meta House, a local non-profit providing alcohol and other drug rehabilitation for women and women with children.

Dominican Republic

Comments: I lived in Estebania, a town of about 3000 people approximately 90 miles west of the capital Santo Domingo. My primary projects were latrine construction and health promotion. Some of my experience felt very difficult and some of it was absolutely fantastic. Just like life in general.
Ecuador

Comments: I worked on several projects along the Columbian/Ecuadorian border, including: aiding in the development of 5 intergral farms (agroforestry, pig and guinea pig raising, tree nurseries, etc.); creating 5 school gardens/tree nurseries; presenting environmental education and public health workshops; creating a fruit preserve cooperative; and providing technical support to 2 fish farms and multiple private landowners. I also served as a Crisis Corp Volunteer in Honduras after Hurricane Mitch in 1999.

Comments: I worked with the Dept. of Accelerated Rural Development in Yasothon Province, in the northeast region. My work consisted of designing earthen dams and reinforced concrete spillways for flood control and irrigation. I presently work for the University of Wisconsin in cooperation with the Midwest Rural Energy Council. Years later, my experiences as a volunteer continue to be a guiding influence in my life.

Comments: Turkmenistan is like nowhere else in the world. The dry Cara Kum desert combined with the harsh winds of the north and the dry heat of the south make Turkmenistan a noman's land. The hospitality of the Turkmen and the stoic roughness of the Russian influence could leave any visitor feeling overwhelmed. Don't forget your water bottle because it has multifaceted uses. You'll leave your heart in Turkmenistan even if you don't think you will.
Zambia

Comments: I lived in the village of Chasosa in the Northern Province of Zambia. I worked with the area rural health center and 5 area secondary schools, developed health education lessons, coordinated teacher trainings and supervised volunteer teachers in delivery of lessons. Secondary projects were with womens groups interested in fund raising projects and cross-cultural exchange of food preparation.
Zimbabwe

Comments: I taught Form 1 (8th Grade) students in a rural village in the north east corner of the country. The families in the area are predominately subsistence level farmers, so just finding the funds to send their children to school is a challenge! I still correspond with former students and teachers from my school, and I'm grateful for the experience I had and the people I've been able to meet because of it--both in the U.S. and abroad.
