Our annual summer picnic at Lake Park was a great success. There was plenty of food, good times, and Peace Corps stories to go around.
Looking for the Adventure of a Lifetime? Interested to Learn About the Ultimate International Volunteer Experience? Ready to really see a different side of this world?
If you're considering Peace Corps as a fulfilling way to help others and as the next step in your personal and professional development, attend a Peace Corps Information Presentation and learn more about what it's like to be a Peace Corps volunteer. Meet local residents who lived and worked in international communities. Hear their inspiring stories and ask questions.
We'll also show a short video highlighting volunteers in service, talk about the application process and discuss the benefits of Peace Corps service, including grad school programs. Currently, Peace Corps is in real need of experienced teachers and applicants skilled in the areas of health, environment, agriculture and forestry. Knowledge of French, Spanish or another language is helpful, although Peace Corps teaches language to its volunteers.

The Class (2008) French film with English subtitles.
In an inventive adaptation of his novel about his experiences working in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Paris, Fran腔is B使audeau stars as a replica of himself -- a passionate French teacher who presides over a classroom of diverse young minds. Not your standard drama or documentary but something in between, this Oscar-nominated film used three cameras during a largely improvisational shoot and features real students rather than actors.
There will be popcorn (of course!), soda, coffee, and tea. Please bring a snack to share and anything special you would like to drink.
If you need a ride, would like to offer a ride, would like to carpool, or for more information, please send an email to me at katiejdecker@gmail.com or call Katie at cell 920-960-8559.
Our annual holiday party on December 12 was a great success, with quite possibly the best and most diverse potluck ever found in Milwaukee! Thanks to all who attended and brought food, and special thanks to Alterra Coffee for providing free coffee.
When: November 7th 10:00am - 1:00pm
Where: St. Francis Brewery (3825 S. Kinnickinnic Ave, Saint Francis, WI 53235)
Our annual parent brunch is an opportunity for parents to connect with other families, learn more about what their volunteer may be experiencing during the Peace Corps process, and get informed on ways that they can assist their volunteer. This year was no exception. Thirty guests enjoyed the fantastic brunch provided by St. Francis Brewery. Panelists discussed the challenges and rewards of their service, a typical day as a volunteer, and a parent's perspective on her daughter's experience. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Due: October 31, 2009

On October 10th our fifth Peace Corps Partnership Dinner was held at the Ethiopian Cottage, a traditional Ethiopian restaurant located at 1824 N. Farwell Ave. in Milwaukee; owned by Yigletu and Alma Debebe.
A total of $570 was raised by the dinner through donations and MPCA matching funds - a special thanks to Allegra Troiano who made an extra donation all the way from Colombia! After dinner, the group voted to fund $500 of a Community Granary Project in Cameroon. The project is headed by Wisconsin PCV (E. Bussiere). The total project cost was $7,995 of which approximately $2,800 remains unfunded. The project will fund the construction of a community granary so that local farmers can store their harvests.
The remaining $70 raised was donated to a Health Clinic Electrification Project located in Mali. This project was second in voting behind the Granary, and will provide a solar panel to a newly constructed community clinic. The electricity generated will give doctors and nurses the light needed to provide services at nightÉespecially for delivering babies. Total project cost is $5,648 of which approximately $3,550 remains unfunded.
Private donations to these two projects, and many others, can be made online by visiting the "Donate Now" section of the Peace Corps website at: www.peacecorps.org.
We send a special "thank you" to Marquette Trinity Fellows for sharing the evening with us. We hope they stay in touch with the MPCA, and that they will not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do help them with their acclimation to Milwaukee life.
Please watch our website for the next PC Partnership Dinner event to be held in March 2010 (region supported, location and time to be announced). As always we are open to suggestions for suitable ethnic restaurants and/or event ideas. Send us your thoughts: info@milwaukeepeacecorps.org
